How to Prepare for Your Hair & Makeup Trial

Before we get there, though, there’s a monumentally important step in the process—your wedding hair and makeup trials!

We view hair & makeup trials as more than a quick check-in or chat, more than a mere salon visit or casual practice run, and have a few pointers for how to prep for and approach this time with your artist/s mentally, energetically, and physically.

Communication + Experimentation = SUCCESS
The purpose of your hair & makeup trials is to TRY styles! Everything won’t be a Yes—but that doesn’t mean there’s anything wrong. It is important that you speak up and let your bridal hair makeup artist/s know what you do & don’t like along the way—that’s what they’re there for, and they won’t know if you don’t tell them!
Expect tweaks, both during and possibly after the trial. Some brides think that if they don’t love a detail or two (or the whole look for that matter) that they need a new artist or that there is an issue with achieving their desired result. In fact, quite the contrary! You’re gaining clarity and perspective to arrive at exactly what you want before you walk down the aisle.
Typically, in the rare event that a wedding hair and makeup trial does go awry, it’s from a breakdown in communication rather than lack of skill from the artist. Trust us—you won’t hurt our feelings (of course as long as it’s delivered with neutrality and kindness!); we want you to use your voice and tell us exactly what you’re thinking and feeling so that we can make any adjustments necessary well in advance of wedding day.
But you have to let us know as soon as these things come up! Some tweaks can be easily fixed day-of without a redo; sometimes a second trial is needed. We’re here for YOU, and your happiness is our happiness, so we want to make sure you feel secure and confident every step of the way.
With that said, you’ve hired professional bridal hair and makeup artists for a reason, and you specifically chose Divine Beauty for our high-bar reputation in Denver, CO. So though we encourage you to have at least a ballpark idea if not a crystalized vision of what you want, lean into the collaboration aspect; take into consideration and listen to your artist/s’ suggestions and recommendations.
We take the actual time & space of the trial very seriously. Whether at our studio or on-location with you, we do our best to set up a calm and relaxing environment, with an ambiance appropriate for focusing and honing in the masterpiece of your bridal hair & makeup look.
To Wingperson or Not?
Believe it or not, we typically suggest that you do not bring anyone with you to the trial, but if you must have a wingperson for moral support, it’s a good idea to consider who it is and your relationship dynamic with them. We have seen all too often a trial setting turn into a feud, or a bride getting confused about what she wants because an opinionated family member is whispering unwarranted solicitations in her ear.
Prep 2 Days Out
Finally, physical prep for your bridal hair & makeup trials is a wide range based on the results you’re trying to achieve. For example: clip-in extensions, deep conditioning treatments on your hair or a trim, teeth whitening, or spray tan (approximately two days before the trial). This is so that you can see how it all comes together for your overall look without waiting until day-of.
